NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County police had to evacuate a beach over the holiday weekend after an unusual discovery.

A military flare used in training exercises washed ashore at Smith Point County Park in Shirley on Sunday morning.

Police cleared the beach, buried the flare and blew it up, CBS2 reported.

Nobody was injured.

The beach reopened a few hours later.
