Nassau County Police: Woman Stabs Sister's Dog After It Bites Her 1-Year-Old Son

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - A Hempstead woman was arrested after allegedly stabbing a dog that bit her young son, Nassau County Police said.

The incident happened in an apartment on Linden Place in Hempstead around 9:30 a.m. Monday, police said.

Stephanie Penado, 26, allegedly stabbed her sister's dog repeatedly on his nose and back with a large kitchen knife after the dog bit her 1-year-old boy. The boy suffered a minor cut to his face, police said.

The dog is being treated at North Shore Animal League for his injuries. Prosecutors said the dog needed surgery that cost nearly $2,000.

Penado is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and criminal mischief. She was ordered by a judge to get a mental health evaluation, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reports.
