You Won't Believe This Pastoral Sheep Farm In Gangwon, South Korea

By Mario McKellop

Later this winter, hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world will be heading to South Korea's Gangwon Province to watch Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Those visitors should also know that in addition to the spectacle of the Games, the Gangwon region is home to many noteworthy attractions that are worth visiting and exploring.

One such location is the beautiful and tranquil Daegwallyeong Sheep Farm. Like the United States, South Korea is one of the world's most digitally connected and technologically advanced countries on the planet. While hyper connectivity offers many benefits, being in constant contact can be exhausting. When South Koreans want an escape from the digital world, they had to Daegwallyeong.

The only farm in all of South Korea that raises sheep, Daegwallyeong is a 50-acre oasis away from the modern world. While watching the sheep run around their serene habitat, visitors can take a relaxing and restorative 40-minute walk around the farm's paved perimeter. Doing so is a great way to disconnect from the Internet and reconnect with the real world.

Another one of Daegwallyeong's highlights is an old wooden shack. A delightfully rustic structure that perfectly complements the farm's rural charms, the shack has become quite the local landmark since being featured in the 2003 South Korean romantic drama "A Man Who Went to Mars." Even without that cinematic connection, the old shack's position at the top of a hillside makes it a great place for couples and families to take photographs that they will cherish for years to come.

Lastly, it's customary at the farm for guests to take time out and personally interact with and feed the sheep. The reason being, doing so allows visitors to form a bond with the animals, and according to tradition, truly open themselves up to love. In today's world, couldn't we all use a little more love?

Whether you're interested in checking out the Winter Games or looking for relaxing vacation in the beautiful and peaceful place, South Korea's Gangwon Province is a destination that is worth the journey.
