Residents Allowed To Return After Gas Leak Prompts Evacuations In Ocean County
BRICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Residents have been allowed to return home after officials say a strong odor of gas permeated a neighborhood in Ocean County, New Jersey and prompted evacuations Saturday.
Police in Brick said reports of a strong gas smell around Tennessee, Hudson, and Georgia Drives started coming in just before noon.
Approximately 40 homes were evacuated, according to police.
Police said the source of the leak was found on Tennesse Drive and service was turned off around 3 p.m.
New Jersey Natural Gas Company crews are on scene making repairs, which are expected to last five to six hours.
It was deemed safe for residents to return while the repairs are underway.
No injuries were reported.
