2 People Stabbed Inside Shopping Mall In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Two people were stabbed inside a mall Saturday in Jersey City.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. at Newport Centre.

"Somebody got stabbed inside JCPenny," one 911 caller said.

Jersey City Police said two young adults suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken to Jersey City Medical Center and were expected to be OK.

"I seen the cops running toward the crowd, but everybody split up coming from JCPenny," witness Alqu Eddy told CBS2's Lisa Rozner.

Merchandise was left a mess and blood stains could be seen on the floor of the bedding section.

Police cordoned off the area for some time but later reopened it to shoppers. The crime scene was not yet cleaned up.

"The cashier told me that it was a fight between these two guys – one had a gun, one had a knife – and there was blood everywhere," shopper Angelo Lugo said.

It's unclear what prompted the stabbing or what type of weapon was used in the attack.

Regular customers said they're alarmed and hope this was an isolated incident

"It's a good mall. Never happened anything like this," said Patricia Freird.

"It's very alarming, especially in Newport Mall. It's supposed to be a nice area, you know?" Lugo added.

The incident was under investigation and no arrests had been made late Saturday night.
