Dr. Richard Shlofmitz from St. Francis Hospital says screaming at the TV while chowing down on unhealthy foods isn’t the best combination for your heart.

“Your emotions are rising up and down and you are eating bad things. You’re usually eating fried foods, salty foods, you’re drinking If you have a heart condition, it could be exacerbated,” he said.

While it may be hard to do, Shlofmitz recommends staying away from too much salt like potato chips and fried foods and says if you start experiencing certain symptoms, seek help right away.

“If you’re getting tightness in your chest, shortness of breath, light-headed, arm pain, dizziness, those are things you better get checked out,” he said.

Eighteen students at P.S. 115 on 92nd Street and Avenue L in Canarsie, Brooklyn came down with some type of stomach ailment Friday afternoon, 1010 WINS’ reported.

Officials weren’t sure if the kids suffered from food poisoning or some type of virus. Some of the kids were vomiting so severely before 2 p.m. that an ambulance had to be called to the school, 1010 WINS’ Eileen Lehpamer reported.

EMS said 12 of the children from the school were taken to Jamaica Hospital.

There was no immediate official ruling on what made the kids sick, but all of the students ate the same pizza.

Department of Education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg issued the following statement Friday afternoon: “Five hundred students were served lunch – all the students who got sick came from the same [third-grade] classroom.”

The Department of Health will determine the final cause.

Yaribely Almonte, 20, is accused of wrapping the fetus of her unborn daughter in plastic and dumping it in a garbage bin outside of her West 191st Street apartment.

Authorities are investigating whether the woman ended her pregnancy by drinking an herbal concoction billed as an abortion-causing tea, a person familiar with the case told The Associated Press Thursday.

The body was found on Tuesday by the building superintendent, who was sorting recyclables, police said. Almonte was arrested and charged on Wednesday night.

Under New York state law, an abortion can only be performed on a fetus older than 24 weeks if the procedure is necessary to save the woman’s life.

The Medical Examiner has yet to determine the cause of death. Almonte was released with an order to appear in court in January.

WCBS 880′s Peter Haskell On The New Treatment Recommendation

More than 110,000 people in New York City are infected with HIV, more than in any other U.S. city and about 75 percent of all cases in the state.

For those infected with HIV, taking AIDS drugs is an aggressive move that has been shown to prolong life and stem the spread of the disease.

Standard practice has been to have patients put off the expensive pill regimen, which can cost up to $15,000 a year in the United States, until the immune system weakens.

But Health Commissioner Thomas Farley said recent studies have shown that the benefits of early treatment, combined with education and testing, appear to be a promising strategy for countering the epidemic.

“I would say I’m more optimistic now than I’ve ever been about this epidemic,” Farley told 1010 WINS. “I’ve been involved in it for over 30 and it’s mostly been bad news over the years, but now I can say confidently that I feel like we’re winning and I’m hopeful that during my lifetime we can drop our new infection rate to zero.” 

City health officials said the new recommendation could initially help about 3,000 people get on medications. About 66,000 New Yorkers living with HIV that the Health Department tracks are being effectively treated with AIDS drugs, they said.

“What we’ve seen is that with the advent of what we call H.A.A.R.T., or highly active antiretroviral therapy, that patients are living longer and many of them will live full lives and die of another disease and not HIV,” Dr. Vicki Sharp of the new St. Luke’s-Roosevelt West 17th Street HIV/AIDS  clinic told WCBS 880.

In Washington, President Barack Obama renewed the U.S. commitment to ending AIDS by setting new goals for getting more people access to those life-saving drugs and boosting spending on treatment in the U.S. by $50 million dollars.

“We can beat this disease,” Obama declared at a World AIDS Day event at Georgetown University.

In New York, several city landmarks, including Madison Square Garden, the Apollo Theater and Radio City Music Hall, will be dimming their lights tonight as part of World AIDS Day.

The Empire State Building will light up in red tonight in honor of the red ribbon for HIV/AIDS awareness.

The AIDS charity Bailey House is also having events today at Harlem Hospital, including speakers, presentations and poetry readings.

“Really looking back and celebrating the lives of the thousands of homeless men, women and children who have died and we’re also celebrating life, those who are still living with HIV and AIDS,” Bailey House CEO Gina Quattrochi told 1010 WINS.

Bailey House provides HIV/AIDS testing throughout the year.

At Trinity Church today, the names of those who have died of AIDS will be read aloud.

Other events around the city include candlelight vigils and a march and rally in Lower Manhattan.

The television personality drew a lot of heat in September when he claimed on his show that trace amounts of arsenic in apple juice may pose a health risk.

“After testing dozens of samples from three different cities in America, Dr. Oz discovered that some of the nation’s best known brands of apple juice contain arsenic,”  the Dr. Oz Show said on its website.  To see Dr. Oz’s full report on arsenic in apple juice, click here.

Dr. Richard Besser, former acting head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, scolded Oz for scaring consumers with what Besser called an “extremely irresponsible” report.

The FDA said the lab methods were not appropriate and that its own tests show much lower arsenic levels.

“Arsenic is present in the environment as a naturally occurring substance or as a result of contamination from human activity,” the FDA said on its website. “It is found in water, air, food, and soil in organic and inorganic forms.”

The agency warned the show’s producers in advance that their testing was misleading.

“The Food and Drug Administration has every confidence in the safety of apple juice,” the FDA saud, adding “…there is no evidence of any public health risk from drinking these juices.”

Now Dr. Oz has gotten a boost from Consumer Reports. The magazine studied arsenic and lead content in various juices and found that 10 percent of the samples had arsenic levels that exceeded federal standards.

The magazine tested 28 juices purchased around New York City. Most of the arsenic the magazine detected was inorganic, which the magazine says is a carcinogen linked to bladder, lung and skin cancer.

The magazine says the results are especially troubling because children drink so many juice drinks, and their small size makes them more susceptible.

The magazine’s advocacy arm is calling on the FDA to set lead and arsenic standards for juice, and said it’s “best advice” for parents is to limit the amount of juice kids drink.

Comedian Patrice O’Neal has died from complications after suffering a stroke last month. O’Neal’s manager Jonathan Brandstein said the comedian died Tuesday morning in a New York-area hospital. He was 41.

“Many of us have lost a close and loved friend; all of us have lost a true comic genius,” Brandstein said in a statement.

O’Neal appeared on Conan O’Brien’s and David Letterman’s late night shows and was a frequent guest on the “Opie & Anthony” radio show on Sirius XM.

“Yes it’s true that our pal Patrice O’Neal has passed away. The funniest and best thinker I’ve known. PERIOD,” O&A said via Twitter.

O’Neal’s performance was a highlight of last summer’s Comedy Central’s roast of Charlie Sheen. Sheen tweeted on Tuesday, “The entertainment world as well as the world at large lost a brilliant man today.” He added, “My tears today are for the tremendous loss to his true friends and loving family.”

Di Fara Pizza, located on Avenue J in Midwood, was hit with 67 code violations last week by the city because of food storage temperatures and signs of mice and flies.

1010 WINS’ John Montone Gets Reaction In Midwood

Dom DeMarco Jr. says customers are craving the handmade pies cranked out by his dad for the last 47 years.  However, it’s been somewhat of a forced vacation for 75-year-old Domenico DeMarco Sr.

When asked by CBS 2′s Tony Aiello if he was enjoying the time off, DeMarco Sr. answered “yeah, I think so.”

Still, some loyal customers said they will head right back once the doors open again because — simply put – the pizza is “perfect.”

“It tastes like they use fresh tomatoes, it tastes like the cheese just came straight out of a cow,” one woman told 1010 WINS’ John Montone.

DeMarco Sr. said most customers only care about the quality of the pie.

“I had the inspector over here one time. The customer was over here, he said ‘I see pizza on the floor I eat it,’ he said to the inspector,” he told Aiello.

Others, however, say the Health Department got it right by closing the place down.

“It’s dirty in there, it’s dirty. You can see,” said one woman.

One man said he stopped going to the pizza joint because, as he claims, he spotted a mouse inside.

“It’s just a dirty place,” he said. “It’s good pizza, but when you got things crawling around, who the hell wants to eat pizza?”

The pizzeria opened in 1964 and hasn’t changed a whole lot since then.  There is certainly a patina of age on the old pizza dough mixing machine and on the stove, where the homemade pizza sauce simmers for hours and hours every day.

Di Fara was shut down once before, but after it opened, people were again lining up for the $5-a-slice pizza.  DeMarco Jr. said the family is working with a consultant to fix the violations and reopen as soon as possible.

“His body is unable to make the antibodies that everyone needs to fight off infection,” said his mother, Robin. “At any time, complications can arise such as liver complications, lymphomas, and other malignancies.”

The only cure is a bone marrow or stem cell transplant.

She says thousands of potential donors have had their cheek swabbed, but the money isn’t there to process the kits.

Dr. Alan Fleischman, medical director at the March of Dimes, said premature babies have serious consequences early on and then long-term disability.

However, he says the prematurity rate has decreased as much as five percent in the last several years.

“Much of that is because of efforts of the March of Dimes and others to decrease the number of babies born too soon because of convenience,” he told WCBS 880 reporter Marla Diamond.

Fleischman says that premature birth exacts a huge emotional, physical, and financial toll on families.

“There are 13 million premature babies born around the world and a million of them die every year,” he said.

The March of Dimes is urging the government to renew the federal PREEMIE Act, which would expand research into the causes and prevention of prematurity.

“It’s not just prenatal care. It’s preconception care as well,” he said.

Smoking, diabetes, and obesity are all seen as major risk factors for premature birth.

Parent groups worldwide will use social media to educate the public today – World Prematurity Day.

In addition, the Empire State Building will be lit tonight in purple to symbolize hope for a healthy start for more babies.

Health experts say it’s fast becoming a Petri dish of germs. The cold weather, the close quarters and the lack of sanitation are combining to create a possibly serious public health danger, reports CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer.

It’s not only the noise from the drums or the free spirited topless dancers who perform for swarms of speechless gawkers that are creating a quality of life crisis at Zuccotti Park. Now there is concern about a potential public health menace — disease.

You have already seen some of the protestors coughing, something they call “Zuccotti lung,” but experts said that is just the beginning.

“We’re starting to see respiratory problems and the flu and the cold season is now at hand in November and in addition there a few outbreaks of a Colisi virus, the so-called norovirus, the stomach flu – that’s the vomiting and diarrhea virus,” said Dr. Philip Tierno Jr.

Tierno, the director of clinical microbiology and immunology at NYU, said the combination of the cold weather, the cramped living conditions, poor sanitation and food open to the air and germs create fertile ground for the spread of disease.

“I think there will be a point in time when the sanitation facilities and the spread of microbial diseases reaches a level where Mayor Bloomberg will have to act,” Dr. Tierno said.

On his radio show Friday the mayor offered a cryptic response about the Zuccotti Park situation.

“We are watching it. We’ll do what’s appropriate when appropriate,” Bloomberg said.

Later, he ducked Kramer’s question on whether there is a tipping point from “Occupy Wall Street.”

“I think they have totally reached the tipping point. They really, really have. It’s unhealthy. It’s unsanitary,” Battery Park resident Nina Marabetian said.

“It’s a detriment to everyone that works around here,” Jose Aragon added.

“I think they’re overstaying their stay now,” Skip Hartman said.

Although many people say the clock is ticking no one knows when the alarm will actually go off and Mayor Bloomberg will take action.

Meanwhile, John Zuccotti, the head of the company that owns the park, insisted it is up to the city to enforce the laws. But Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told Kramer it’s up to Zuccotti’s firm to pull the plug because they own the property.

Health officials said the liver contaminated with salmonella was manufactured by Schreiber Processing Corp. under the MealMart brand. They said 89 cases of foodborne illness have been linked to the product, including 56 in New York City and 33 in nine upstate counties.

The Queens-based company is recalling the product.

Besides New York, the livers also were sold in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Minnesota.

The company’s quality control manager said Wednesday the recall involves partially cooked 10-pound boxes of broiled chicken livers distributed to retail establishments.

The label says to cook it until the food reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees, but people may be thrown off by the label also saying “broiled.”

Glenda Vanry has trusted her hairdresser, Roger Least, to style her hair–for more than a decade.

“My hair has been blonde, my hair’s been red,” vanry said.

But recently, he gave her more than a cut and a color, he gave her an impromptu cancer screening.

“I happened to notice a little irritation behind her ear,” Least said.

“He was insistent that I had to go to the doctor about it,” Vanry said.

Eventually, Vanry did go to the doctor.

“My diagnosis was basal-cell cancer, it had spread both depth wise, it had reached the skull,” Vanry said.

Vanry isn’t the only one. Doctors say more and more hairdressers are saving lives.

“Hair stylists are often the first line of defense against skin cancers,” said Robert Pariser President of the American Dermatology Association.

Researchers with the Harvard School of Public Health surveyed 200 different stylists and found as many as 40 percent now check their customers’ scalps for suspicious moles and lesions.

Stylist Patricia Ingmire-Richard said she can count on two hands the cancer cases she’s discovered over the years.

“Six. And some of them have been pretty serious,” she said.

Cathy Reese is one of Ingmire-Richard’s lucky clients. She found a small bump on Reese’s scalp that turned out to be a malignent tumor.

At least 6 percent of all melanomas are actually found on the scalp and neck, according to Dr. Robert Pariser, President of the American Dermatology Association. He says that number would be much greater if it wasn’t for the intervention of hair stylists.

“It gives them some heads up as the kind of things they let their clients know that the doctor needs to see,” Pariser said.

What’s also helping in the fight against skin cancer is cosmetology schools across the country teaching students how to identify suspicious spots on a client’s scalp.

It’s not easy to tell a client that they may have cancer but both Vanry and Reese — who are now cancer free — say they’re incredibly grateful their stylists not only care about their looks, but also their health.

According to the Harvard study, 28 percent of the stylists they surveyed had formal skin cancer education. The American Dermatology Association is now working with the industry to increase that number.

Overweight and suffering from sleep apnea, New York restaurateur and “Master Chef” judge Joe Bastianich began running about five years ago.

He completed his first Iron Man Triathlon last month.

“I enjoy it. I find the long training to be very, it’s kind of my meditation,” he said.

And Bastianich enjoys eating.

“Not as a reward or a celebration, but to look at food as fuel for my training ambitions. That really changed everything,” he told WCBS 880 reporter Marla Diamond.

This Sunday’s run will be his fourth New York City Marathon and his post-marathon meal will make your mouth water.

“Beer and clams oreganata, eggplant involtini, baked shrimp with spicy tomato sauce,” he said.

Then it’s back to training for his next run.

Steve Kaye, chief of Spring Hill EMS, says the apartment in Spring Valley lost electric power in the weekend snowstorm.

The father came home Monday to find some of his children sick and called 911, Kaye said. EMS workers arrived and detected high carbon monoxide readings. They took two adults and six children to nearby hospitals.

The family might have perished if the father had not called 911, Kaye said.

Spring Valley police Chief Paul Modica says the family members are expected to be released later Monday from the hospitals, however, they may not be able to return to their home.

On Monday, Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy warned residents of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. “Carbon monoxide may in fact be our biggest enemy at the moment,” Malloy said. “Do not bring a gas grill or a kerosene heater into a closed area. You’re going to die. You’re going to kill yourself and potentially your children.”

Breast cancer survivor Lori Dorn says she was subjected to a humiliating public pat-down at John F. Kennedy airport even though she offered to produce documentation about her medical implants.

Dorn wrote in her blog that the patdown at JFK added “insult to injury and caused me a great deal of humiliation.”

Dorn was heading to San Francisco last week when a full-body scanner detected her prostheses. Dorn said she explained she had recently undergone bilateral mastectomy and had tissue expanders implanted for future breast reconstruction. A TSA agent refused to let her retrieve documentation from her wallet “that explains the type of expanders, serial numbers and my doctor’s information,” she said.

“I had no choice but to allow an agent to touch my breasts in front of other passengers,” Dorn said.

In a tweet on her Twitter account Monday, Dorn said she received an apology from a JFK official “who agreed that proper policy wasn’t followed.”

In its own blog, the TSA said it regretted the incident and apologized. “We do our best to treat passengers with the dignity and respect they deserve, but in Lori Dorn’s case, it looks like we missed our mark,” it said.

The TSA said the security director at JFK has reached out to Dorn to learn more about what happened.

The agency said medical cards “are a great way for passengers to discreetly let us know about a medical situation or disability,” and in Dorn’s case TSA agents should have “been more empathetic to her situation.”

It added that private screenings can be requested by anyone for any reason and said the agency recently rolled out a four-part in-service training course focused on screening prosthetics. Training is expected to be completed across the country in over a year.

Dorn said that while she understood the need for safety, airport security agents needed to show compassion and sensitivity.

But what if a doctor could grow replacement organs and body parts in the lab — from your own cells?

As CBS 2’s Dr. Max Gomez found out, it’s already being done.

Luke Masalla looks like a pretty normal 20-year-old, but he’s part of a very unusual club.

Luke’s bladder was grown in a lab.

“I was in kidney failure and my bladder was sending fluid back up into my kidneys and damaging them,” Masalla said.

Luke’s own bladder didn’t work properly because he was born with spina bifida and his doctors were out of options.

That’s when Luke’s parents took him to see Dr. Anthony Atala who proposed a science fiction-like solution — grow a new bladder.

“We take a very small piece of tissue from the specific injured or deceased organ less then half the size of a postage stamp. We then take those cells, grow those cells outside the body,” Dr. Atala said.

A bio-degradable mold is soaked and seeded with nutrients and the stem cells from Luke’s own bladder. After incubation in a bio-reactor, the new bladder was put into Luke.

“My kidneys are doing great. I …last summer I went for my yearly check up in Boston and they look better then they ever,” Luke said.

At the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in North Carolina there are labs that take the stem cells and multiply and grow them. Other labs make biodegradable scaffolds that the cells are then sprayed onto and then they are all cooked in something called a bio-reactor to get them ready for human use.

“At the institute we are growing over 20 different types of tissues and organs now some of these we’ve already put into patients,” Dr. Atala said.

Those tissues and organs include lab-grown arteries, ears, finger bones, urethras and artificial heart valves, again grown from human cells. Replacement human skin for burn victims and even tiny muscles are being grown.

Then there are some really ambitious projects.

“The most complex organs are the solid organs like the liver, the heart, the kidney, because you have a lot more cells that need to be fed and need to function properly,” Dr. Atala said.

Gomez saw a miniature lab-grown liver, which was not yet ready for humans. The larger organs are built layer by layer with a modified ink jet printer that sprays different cell types onto the organ scaffold.

Believe it or not, Luke got his bladder 10 years ago. He went on to become the captain of his high school wrestling team and is a junior at UConn, all thanks to Dr. Atala’s pioneering work.

“I would have been a lot more sick and I probably would have had to live on dialysis,” Luke said.

Another advantage of growing body parts from a patient’s own stem cells is that they won’t be rejected, so patients won’t need toxic anti-rejection drugs.

But there’s been nothing new for men.

Now, CBS 2’s Maurice DuBois has the first look at the innovative birth control options for men that may just revolutionize what goes on in the bedroom.

“It may be time for a change,” one New Yorker said.

“I would definitely be willing to try the options,” said another.

“I guess I would try it depending upon what it was and how invasive it was,” added another.

Some say it’s a sexual revolution — the birth control burden is shifting to men.

“What we’re seeing is that men are more interested than they were in both taking responsibility and sharing the risk associated with using a product,” said John Townsend, the director of reproductive health for the Population Council.

Now, scientists around the world are in a race to come up with new options for men.

“What we haven’t had are anything in between condoms and vasectomy,” Townsend said.

In addition to preventing pregnancies, condoms have worked especially well at protecting both men and women against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

“They’ve worked for over 10, 20, 30 years and they still work good today,” one person said.

The latest innovations include a male birth control gel — an implant, a shot, even a pill.

“There’s a demand for that,” Townsend said.

Inside a Manhattan lab scientists are working on some of this cutting edge male contraceptive research.

“What we’re working on right now is a set of implants called ‘Ment,’” Townsend said.

Doctors put a tiny silicone implant into the arm. It contains a synthetic steroid, like testosterone, that stops sperm production over time.

“They’re good for one year. They last one year at least,” chief researcher Dr. Narender Kumar said.

They’re also working on a hormone gel that causes sperm production to be interrupted. Experts say it’s difficult to develop male contraceptives without significant side effects.

“Reducing sperm production while maintaining those desirable features of masculinity, which has to do with muscle mass, libido, interest in sex,” Townsend said.

Other products in development around the world include:

* An injection that sabotages sperm so they can’t swim

* A pill that prevents sperm from maturing

* Doctors are using the heat from an ultrasound to halt sperm production

“It will take a while but it’s a while worth waiting for,” Townsend said.

These products are not currently on the market, but researchers say they’re in the final stages of development.

Oz said on his show on Wednesday that testing by a New Jersey lab has found what he claims are concerning levels of arsenic in many juices.

“After testing dozens of samples from three different cities in America, Dr. Oz discovered that some of the nation’s best known brands of apple juice contain arsenic,”  the Dr. Oz Show says on its website.

However, the FDA says the lab methods were not appropriate and that its own tests show much lower arsenic levels.

“Arsenic is present in the environment as a naturally occurring substance or as a result of contamination from human activity,” the FDA says on its website. “It is found in water, air, food, and soil in organic and inorganic forms.”

The agency warned the show’s producers in advance that their testing was misleading.

“The Food and Drug Administration has every confidence in the safety of apple juice,” the FDA says, adding “…there is no evidence of any public health risk from drinking these juices.”

Dr. Richard Besser, former acting head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also scolded Oz Thursday on ABC’s Good Morning America show for scaring consumers with what Besser called an “extremely irresponsible” report.

“I’m very upset about this,” Besser said on the show. “Putting out this kind of a health warning, manufacturing a health crisis based on faulty, incomplete data. This fear-mongering reminds me of yelling fire in a movie theater.”

But Oz defended his position.

“We looked at the total arsenic levels because that’s what the FDA looks at, that’s what the EPA evaluates initially and in addition, your assumption that organic arsenic is safe is not true,” Oz said. “There is a lot of debate over the safety of organic arsenic and the body converts inorganic arsenic into some types of organic arsenic that are very toxic so it is misleading to claim that all the organic arsenic is safe.”

Prior to the show’s airing, the FDA sent the Dr. Oz Show two letters.

The first letter, sent on Sept. 9, reads in part:

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is aware that EMSL Analytical, Inc. has obtained and tested 50 samples of retail apple juice for total arsenic content on behalf of Zoco Productions. It is our understanding that, based on these test results, you will assert during an upcoming episode of The Dr. Oz Show that apple juice is unsafe because of the amounts of total arsenic found in the samples.

We appreciate that you have made the results of these tests available to us. As we have previously advised you, the results from total arsenic tests CANNOT be used to determine whether a food is unsafe because of its arsenic content. We have explained to you that arsenic occurs naturally in many foods in both inorganic and organic forms and that only the inorganic forms of arsenic are toxic, depending on the amount. We have advised you that the test for total arsenic DOES NOT distinguish inorganic arsenic from organic arsenic.”

In a second letter sent to the show on Sept. 13, the FDA says they did their own testing on apple juice samples from Nestle/Gerber.

The letter states it found that “…the results of the tests cited above do not indicate that apple juice contains unsafe amounts of arsenic. The FDA reaffirms its belief, as stated in our September 9, 2011 letter, that it would be irresponsible and misleading for the Dr. Oz Show to suggest that apple juice is unsafe based on tests for total arsenic.”

A number of juice companies as well as the Juice Products Association have also responded to the arsenic in apple juice claim.

“The results of tests for arsenic in apple juice that were shared by the Dr. Oz Show with the Juice Products Association should not be interpreted as fact,” the JPA says on its website. “Test results reported by the Dr. Oz Show were based upon a method intended for testing water.   The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a specific method for testing fruit juice because juice contains many more naturally occurring compounds than water.”

Armonk, New York-based IBM’s supercomputer system, best known for trouncing the world’s best “Jeopardy!” players on TV, is being tapped by one of the nation’s largest health insurers to help diagnose medical problems and authorize treatments.

WellPoint Inc., which has 34.2 million members, will integrate Watson’s lightning speed and deep health care database into its existing patient information, helping it choose among treatment options and medicines.

WellPoint is the nation’s largest publicly traded health insurer based on enrollment. It operates Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in 14 states, including New York and California.

“This very much fits into the sweet spot of what we envisioned for the applications of Watson,” said Manoj Saxena, general manager of an IBM division looking at how the computer can be marketed.

Lori Beer, an executive vice president at Indianapolis-based WellPoint, agreed.

“It’s really a game-changer in health care,” she said.

The WellPoint application will combine data from three sources: a patient’s chart and electronic records that a doctor or hospital has, the insurance company’s history of medicines and treatments, and Watson’s huge library of textbooks and medical journals.

IBM says the computer can then sift through it all and answer a question in moments, providing several possible diagnoses or treatments, ranked in order of the computer’s confidence, along with the basis for its answer.

“Imagine having the ability within three seconds to look through all of that information, to have it be up to date, scientifically presented to you, and based on that patients’ medical needs at the moment you’re caring for that patient,” said WellPoint’s chief medical officer, Dr. Sam Nussbaum.

Saxena said the WellPoint application would likely be accessed from an ordinary computer or handheld device.

Beer said patients needn’t worry that Watson will be used to help insurers deny benefits. If a doctor veers from Watson’s diagnosis or treatment recommendations, the insurer would have a clinician review the case like it currently does. It won’t base a claim decision solely on Watson.

“Ultimately the goal here is not denying treatment but getting people to the right care,” Beer said, adding that Watson was not designed to replace humans.

Beer said WellPoint is trying to offer care providers a tool that helps lead to better treatment outcomes, which is what the insurer wants to base reimbursement on in the future.

Nussbaum said a pilot program will be rolled out early next year at several cancer centers, academic medical centers and oncology practices.

Neither party would say how much IBM is being paid. Saxena said it’s the first money Watson has earned for the company; the $1 million it won on “Jeopardy!” earlier this year was given to charity.

Watson’s next jobs will probably also be in health care, but financial services and public safety applications are on the horizon, Saxena said.

After winning against the best “Jeopardy!” players in history, Watson was beaten by New Jersey U.S. Representative and former rocket scientest Rush Holt.

Amgen today announced the FDA plans to decide by April 26 on its application to expand the use of its bone treatment drug Xgeva to prevent or delay the spread of advanced prostate cancer. The drug is currently used to prevent bone related events such as bone loss and fractures in men undergoing androgen deprivation therapy.

In trials for the new indication, Amgen has reported that Xgeva outperformed a placebo in a late-stage study of how it works in preventing the spread of advanced prostate cancer to bones where prostate cancer is most likely to spread. A monthly treatment of the injectable drug increased bone metastasis-free survival by about four months on average compared with a placebo.

“This is very promising news for patients, says Jonathan W. Simons, president and CEO of the Prostate Cancer foundation which has funded many studies related to Xgeva for improving survivorship of patients. “Not only can Xgeva prevent damage to bone as a result of treatment, it looks as if we may soon have a powerful new tool to prevent bone metastases.”

That brings the total to 50 (along with 19 in Nassau County) and it has residents taking note.

“Everybody is spraying themselves. Anytime we go outside, we spray ourselves with bug spray,” said one Huntington resident.

She’s heeding advice from health officials to make sure any stagnant water around the home, which is where these blood-suckers breed, is dumped.

So far, there has been only one confirmed human case of West Nile on Long Island this season.

Health officials are trying to keep it that way.

WCBS 880′s Catherine Cioffi On The Story

St. Sen. Jeff Klein is proposing a bill aimed at putting police in a better position to respond to emergencies involving the mentally ill.

It would require service providers who place them in residential housing to let police know if those clients have a history of violence.

“We really need to get local law enforcement the tools that they need,” Klein told WCBS 880 reporter Catherine Cioffi.

Klein says if officers are aware of the background, they can alter their tactics.

“[It would] provide for the safety of the client and the tenants that reside in these buildings,” said Klein.

He says, unfortunately, that’s not happening right now.

He adds that his bill balances privacy and protection.

Too much ice cream, too much time in the pool, or too much time in the sun can create sleeping problems, but so too can the heat.

“Sleep hygiene, certainly temperature is very important to control,” says White Plains Hospital sleep lab director Dr. Rochelle Waldman. “A cool environment is more advantageous to a better night’s sleep.”

Sleeping patterns often change during the summer time especially since the sun is up longer. Waldman says getting on a vacation sleep schedule can add to your insomnia.

“They’re staying up late with friends and neighbors having barbecues, going swimming. All of that can affect their sleep,” she says. “It’s important that people have a normal sleep/wake schedule, meaning they go to sleep at the same time approximately every night and wake up at the same time.”

According to Suffolk County‘s regional EMS council, only two percent of people treated by EMTs for cardiac arrests leave the hospital without serious health problems.

The study goes on to say the chances of surviving are worse in Suffolk County than the rest of the country.

One problem is that, compared to other parts of the country, in Suffolk County, a lower percentage of bystanders attempt CPR.

Medical expert Dr. Ken Stier says public CPR training classes could help the county’s success rate.

“Even if you’re able to resuscitate someone after four minutes, they often have significant brain damage,” he told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall.

A county spokesperson said the EMTs in Suffolk are volunteers and must cover a very large area.
