NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Black Friday - the day after Thanksgiving - is the busiest shopping day of the year.

The annual tradition earned its name because it is the day many retailers count on to take them out of the red - losing money - and into the black - turning a profit. To lure customers, retailers often offer steep discounts.

The tradition has taken on a growing intensity in recent history. Some shoppers line up for hours - or even days - before stores open. Some retailers have started holding their Black Friday sales earlier and earlier - several are opening their shops at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving night.

All this means that for the hardcore Black Friday shopper, having a strategy in mind is increasingly important.

While many folks choose to avoid shopping on Black Friday altogether, others look forward to the deep discounts, and don't mind the fracas of the crowds as they swarm stores to get great deals.
