In need of some sandy relaxation just a short trip away? The nine little communities that make up the Hamptons’ main vacation zone — Hampton Bays, Southhampton, Water Mill, Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, Sag Harbor, Wainscott, East Hampton, and Amagansett — offer New Yorkers their pick of beaches, art, vineyards, golf and nightlife. Along the way, visitors can discover all kinds of hidden gems: From the sublime osprey nest bayside to Dune Road, to tycoon Ted Forstmann’s legacy of the Huggy Bear Invitational charity tennis tournament.
While beautiful, much of this Long Island paradise doesn’t come cheap. The seaside community’s reputation for drawing the affluent and the elite is well-founded; for years, Bill and Hillary Clinton have picked the Hamptons as their favorite get-away spot, and such celebs as Sean Combs (aka P Diddy), Steven Spielberg, Vera Wang, Billy Joel and Ralph Lauren are residents.
For those who still worry about household bills and watching budgets, there is still a lot to do and see in a trip to the Hamptons. All summer long, the Southampton Cultural Center’s “Concerts In The Park” series draws diverse musicians to Agawam Park and Coopers Beach.
