The Nobel Peace Prize winner and twice-elected Prime Minister of Israel was assassinated on Nov. 4, 1995 following a peace rally in Tel Aviv.

Anwar Sadat

The third Egyptian President was killed on October 6, 1981. A Jihadist military cell attacked Sadat with grenades and assault rifles during a military parade.

Benazir Bhutto

Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, was attacked on Dec. 27, 2007 with guns and explosives during a campaign rally. Al-Qaeda claimed credit for the attack.

Franz Ferdinand

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was killed on June 28, 1914. His assassination in Sarajevo precipitated Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia, which caused Germany and Austria-Hungary, and countries allied with Serbia to declare war on each other, beginning World War I.

Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi, the pre-eminent political and spiritual leader of India during the Indian independence movement, was shot on Jan. 30, 1948.

Thomas Hagan

The only man to admit to killing Malcolm X, Hagan was freed on parole in Manhattan on April 27, 2010.

John F. Kennedy

During a motorcade in Dallas, Texas, Kennedy was shot to death on Nov. 22, 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald. Conspiracy theories surrounding his death continue to this day.

John Lennon

Beatles member, peace activist and one of the most prolific musicians of our time, Lennon was shot and killed outside of the Dakota apartment building in Manhattan on Dec. 8, 1980.

Abraham Lincoln

Hailed as the greatest American President by many, Lincoln was shot in the back of the head at the Ford Theater by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865.

Malcolm X

The African-American Muslim minister and radical political activist was shot 17 times on Feb. 21, 1965 while giving a speech at Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom.

Ahmad Shah Massoud

Dubbed the "Lion of Panjshir" the Afghan leader was a key figure in the opposition to the Taliban and the Soviet occupiers. He was killed by al-Qaeda in a suicide attack two days before September 11th. The date of his death
is celebrated as "Massoud Day" in Afghanistan.

President William McKinley

The 25th U.S. President was at a meet-and-greet at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo when he was shot while trying to shake the hand of young anarchist Leon Czolgosz. McKinley died 8 days later.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Nobel Peace Prize winner and Civil Rights pioneer, Dr. King was shot on April 4, 1968 on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. Shooter James Earl Ray was caught two months later.

Olof Palme

Social Democrat Prime Minister of Sweden in the ’70s and ’80s Olof Palme (1927 - 1986) was shot on the night of February 28, 1986 at point-blank range in an alley on his return home after attendance of the Grand Cinema in Stockholm. His assassin is still at large.

Patrice Lumumba

The first legally elected Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo after he helped win its independence from Belgium in June 1960, he was executed in Belgium by a firing squad on Jan. 17, 1961.

Pim Fortuyn

The Dutch politician, author, public servant, sociologist and professor who formed his own party, Pim Fortuyn List, was shot in 1992 by Volkert van der Graaf, a marginalized-peoples and animal-rights activist.

Robert F. Kennedy

Presidential candidate and JFK's younger brother, RFK was shot three times in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968 by Palestinian-born Sirhan Sirhan. Sirhan claimed that he shot Kennedy because of his support for Israel.

Leon Troskey

Trotsky was one of the leaders of the Russian October Revolution, second only to Vladimir Lenin. On 20 August 1940, Trotsky was attacked in his home in Mexico with an ice axe by undercover NKVD agent Ramón Mercader.
