It’s extreme security, for an extreme situation. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly may have been referring to the massive .50-caliber rifle when he spoke of the NYPD’s ability to take down an aircraft. It’s a weapon that can do the job.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg confirmed Ray Kelly’s claims that the NYPD has the capability to take down a plane, but was not ready to say having that capability could have prevented the terrorist attacks on 9/11.
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said overall costs for anti-terror projects have risen 44 percent. They include reinforcing bridges, tunnels and stations and electronic surveillance and fire ventilation projects.
