The PGA announced Tuesday that Bethpage Black will host the rowdy Ryder Cup 2024. The public course on Long Island with a reputation of loud and boisterous fans also will get the 2019 PGA Championship.
From an operations standpoint, there is ample space in the state park for hospitality and other structures that have turned the Ryder Cup into the biggest show in golf.
It will be held July 17 at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, the course for the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Open. The tournament is scheduled for the day after the All-Star game at Citi Field in New York.
Tiger Woods felt a twinge in his lower back when he awoke and felt pain throughout the second round at Bethpage Black. He managed to overcome a bogey-bogey start and get within range of Nick Watney and the resurgent Sergio Garcia.
Thousands of fans chased after Woods and McIlroy, in the marquee group based on their standing in the FedEx Cup — Woods at No. 1 and McIlroy at No. 3. Both of them got off to a reasonable start.
PGA officials say that discussions about a championship coming this way are impressive.
