Cardinal Timothy Dolan is continuing to speak out against the Obama administration’s controversial birth control mandate a day after Catholic institutions around the country filed a lawsuit against the policy.
The legal salvos have been fired by Catholic institutions across the country. Cardinal Dolan, the President of the U.S. Conference of Bishops, said the plan to force most employers to provide birth control coverage is just not acceptable.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan said the Health and Human Services regulation on providing free contraceptive services to employees of religiously based institutions is a violation of religious freedom.
Democrats argued they were protecting women’s rights. Republicans argued they were attempting to protect the First Amendment right to religious freedom. Both parties used the issue to rally their bases. The 51-48 vote was close, upholding Obamacare.
There were protests on Capitol Hill on Friday from female lawmakers about the all-male panel of witnesses called to testify about what they believe is the Obama administration’s violation of religious freedom. The lawmakers said it’s a women’s rights issue.
