Blessing of the Animals
The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine looked more like a zoo than a church for the event, which is meant to honor Saint Francis.
Dogs, cats, kittens and one rabbit were assembled outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the annual Blessing of the Animals.
Thousands of people lined up for hours outside of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, many of them trying to get a glimpse of the animals that were being blessed.
A blessing of the animals will be held Sunday at a church on Park Avenue on the Upper East Side.
A llama, a mini horse, falcons, dogs and even a camel were offered blessings at the Morningside Heights church to celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment.
It was a different flock that gathered for church services on Sunday morning, as congregants of the two- and four-legged varieties gathered in Morningside Heights.
