A state lawmaker who was acquitted earlier this month in a bribery case has been arrested on new corruption charges.
A top official in New York City’s Housing Department faces a host of charges for allegedly being involved in a kickback scheme.
The 65-year-old was arrested on bribery and official misconduct charges last week.
Former Middlesex County Sheriff Joe Spicuzzo was arrested on Monday, accused of selling jobs and promotions at the sheriff’s office for up to $25,000 each, authorities said.
Smith embraced his attorneys as the verdict was read in Newark federal court. Prosecutors accused him of taking $15,000 from a government informant who posed as a developer.

Prosecutors were making their summations in Newark federal court. They called one rebuttal witness earlier Tuesday from the Election Law Enforcement Commission, which tracks campaign donations.
The prosecution was expected to call Assemblyman John Wisniewski. He heads the Democratic State Committee and is chairman of the Assembly transportation committee.
The developer was undercover government informant Solomon Dwek, who secretly taped meetings with Smith and other public officials.
