FAA Announces New Requirements For Commercial Co-Pilots

The regulations require first officers to have at least 1,500 hours of flying experience. Airline captains are already required to have at least 1,500 hours. Previously, first officers were only required to have 250 hours of flight time.

The federal government announced new regulations Wednesday to keep tired pilots out of the cockpit. The new rules were prompted by a deadly accident involving a plane that took off from Newark Liberty International Airport in 2009.
