Sean Fisher died August 25, 2008 at football practice. The 13-year-old collapsed and died from an undiagnosed heart condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart wall.

New NY Law Requires Newborns Be Checked For Congenital Heart Defects Before Leaving Hospital

The measure, which took effect Monday, requires all birthing facilities to administer the test called pulse oximetry screening. The one-minute procedure provides early detection of heart defects.

L.I. Doctor Successfully Performs Surgery On 2 Russian Girls Through Gift Of Life Program

Katya Lebedeva, 15, and Anastasia Bakhtiarova, 10, are from the same small village in Russia. They were both given only a few more years to live because of congenital heart defects.

NJ Hospitals To Screen Newborns For Congenital Heart Defects

New Jersey is the first state to require hospitals to check newborns for congenital heart defects. Gov. Chris Christie signed the measure into law, requiring hospitals to perform a test which determines the amount of oxygen in the blood before a newborn is discharged.
