The 28-year-old right wing, who had seven points in 17 games for New Jersey this season, passed through unconditional waivers on Friday and then signed with HC Lugano in Switzerland.
Jaromir Jagr and fellow Olympians Patrik Elias, Marek Zidlicky and Damien Brunner returned to practice Monday as the Devils held their first full workout since the Olympic break more than two weeks ago.
“No,” Brunner said when asked if he’s heard of the Yankees’ captain. “…No. The only baseball I know is (Justin) Verlander … because of the Tigers last year.”
In addition to the players they have on Teams USA and Canada, the Tri-State Area NHL locals will be sending 10 additional players to the Games, representing Austria, Czech Republic, Norway, Slovakia and Switzerland.
The New Jersey Devils began the season with just one point in their first two games, a 3-0 loss in Pittsburgh and a 4-3 shootout defeat at home against the Islanders.
Matt Moulson scored the only goal of the shootout in the sixth round and the New York Islanders opened the season with a 4-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night.
The New Jersey Devils have signed Damien Brunner after reaching a professional-tryout agreement with the free-agent forward earlier this month.
Cory Schneider’s competitive start to his Devils career couldn’t have gone more swimmingly.
