A study of prosecutions handled by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office has concluded that black and Hispanic defendants are more likely to be held in jail before trial than white and Asian defendants.
The defendants allegedly packaged and sold crack cocaine and marijuana in candy wrappers called “Sour Power” near East 118th Street and Lexington Avenue, officials said.
The men were charged in what prosecutors call and elaborate ATM scam that stole thousands of debit card numbers from unknowing customers.
In an effort to safely dispose of unused or expired prescription medications, the city is holding a drug buy-back program on Saturday.
“The brazenness of the horrific attack charged by the grand jury is truly shocking,” District Attorney Cyrus Vance said Wednesday.
