A proposal in Connecticut to expand access to driver’s licenses to immigrants regardless of their legal status has received the support of the governor, legislative leaders and mayors from across the state.
The driver’s licenses will provide temporary legal status for young motorists to obtain car registration and insurance, said Michael Lawlor, undersecretary for criminal justice policy and planning.
The new law, which will take effect in one year, will require anyone over the age of 18 getting a new driver’s license to answer whether they would like to join the state’s donor list. The question is currently optional.
