An FDNY bell tolled 146 times as each of the victims’ names were read aloud. The March 25, 1911 factory fire led to better working conditions in factories throughout the city and the development of fire codes.
More than 70 families were forced to evacuate the building earlier this month after a contractor, who filed improper permits for renovations at the building, removed the fire escapes illegally.
The owners of an evacuated Bronx apartment building hunkered down Wednesday as residents and reporters demanded answers as to why they would remove fire escapes and render the entire structure unsafe.
The hunt was on Wednesday for the licensed engineer, Roland Draper, who filed improper permits for renovations at 2400 Webb Ave., in the Bronx, and as a result the fire escapes were removed illegally.
Every apartment door was closed off and sealed with, of all things, orange towing signs. In the end, having no fire escapes throughout the building forced more than 200 residents to move.
The man apparently was trying to gain access to his mother’s apartment, where he once lived. The mother was away on vacation.
Police said unknown suspects entered apartments via fire escapes on Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint on Dec. 3, and got away with laptops, memory cards and a camera.
