Fire Island National Seashore
Parts of the Fire Island National Seashore are now closed to the public for two weeks while the race is on to stop one of the most destructive forest pests.
Drinking is no longer allowed on two stretches of the federally-owned Fire Island National Seashore as well as during peak hours at East Hampton’s Indian Wells Beach.
Nude sunbathing has been banned along many of the beaches of Fire Island – but not all the beaches will be affected.
Fire Island chief ranger Lena Koschmann said there’s been an increase in complaints and observations of sex, masturbation and prostitution, especially on the popular Lighthouse Beach.
Fire Island, located along the Long Island shore, is New Yorkers’ place to be in the summer time. The long main island surrounded by several small islands can be reached by a ferry ride across the Great South Bay of Long Island.
