Staten Island, Bronx Prisons Among Those Now Closed In New YorkThe state recently closed the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility on Staten Island, the seventh prison, camp or work release facility shuttered in 2011 as New York transferred about 2,600 inmates and 1,400 staff to its 60 remaining penal units in an effort to save millions of dollars and remove excess capacity.
Gov. Cuomo Closing Prisons To Save State FundsCuomo's office says they will close in 60 days, eliminating approximately 3,800 unused prison beds and saving the state $72 million this year and $112 million next year. Remaining inmates will be transferred.
