Beginning Monday, people can begin applying for new credentials to purchase long guns and ammunition. Such credentials will eventually be required to buy ammo, rifles and shot guns.
The law toughened restrictions on military-style rifles and high-capacity semiautomatic handguns, but those restrictions will be changed so those types of weapons can be used on the sets of television shows and movies being shot in New York.
Vocal critics said the gun control measure infringes on their right to bear arms and criticized Gov. Andrew Cuomo and legislators for passing the law.
