The mother of 13-year-old Bryanna Soplin is distraught and heartbroken as she prepares for her daughter’s funeral.
A retired NYPD officer charged in connection with the hit-and-run death of a 13-year-old girl with Down syndrome in Levittown faced a judge Tuesday.
Bryanna Soplin, 13, who had Down syndrome, unknowingly left her family’s home and was crossing Hempstead Turnpike at Gardiners Avenue when she was hit by a minivan just after midnight Sunday, police said.
A driver plowed into a teenage girl and killed her while she crossed a Long Island road early Sunday morning, authorities said. Police are still search searching for the motorist.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. Sunday on a Nassau County Inter-Express Bus on the N6 line headed east on Hempstead Turnpike in Franklin Square.
Ivey Dixon, 27, was arraigned on a second-degree assault charge. Bond was set at $15,000.
