Rescue crews late Tuesday afternoon were trying to extricate a driver from a sport-utility vehicle, after she lost control and went into the trees on the shoulder of westbound Interstate 78 in New Jersey.
About 9,500 customers in Edison and Metuchen were without power as a result of the explosion and fire. Firefighters eventually got the blaze under control and as of 10:30 p.m., all power had been restored.
The collision forced authorities to shut down a stretch of the highway and hampered drivers from getting to the Brooklyn-Battery and Holland tunnels.
