Convictions of Martin Heidgen, Taliyah Taylor and Franklin McPherson hinged on prosecutors’ contention they acted with “depraved indifference to human life.”
New York State Court of Appeals Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman said advances in technology mandate the opening of all courtrooms to cameras so New Yorkers can see for themselves how justice works.
“During the past 12 years, the cost of living increased by 40 percent, eroding judicial salaries,” said Vincent E. Doyle III, president of the lawyers’ group. Yet “judges’ salaries will have risen 27 percent over a 15-year period, far less than the projected inflation rate.”
Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman said in an interview that it’s a good compromise in hard economic times.
