Kayla Gerdes, 20, pleaded guilty in April to manslaughter and other charges in the death of retired doctor, 69-year-old Rebecca Twine.
Prosecutors said on April 20, 2010, Kayla Gerdes was speeding and high on drugs when she lost control of the van she was driving and drove onto a Hempstead lawn, killing 69-year-old Dr. Rebecca Twine.
Gerdes’ trial was supposed to begin this week, nearly 18 months to the day after she allegedly climbed behind the wheel of a van and ran over and killed a beloved doctor while high on Xanax and Oxycodone.
Prosecutors said they began investigating Lutful Chowdhury following a fatal car accident in Hempstead in April 2010 that left Dr. Rebecca Twine dead. The driver — Kayla Gerdes — is accused of being under the influence of drugs.
Police said Kayla Gerdes was high on drugs and speeding when she lost control of her van and struck and killed 69-year-old Dr. Rebecca Twine-Wright.
Months after retired Hempstead doctor Rebecca Twine was killed mowing her lawn, the woman charged in her death was apologetic Tuesday and told reporters she was “really sorry.”
