Firefighters worked overnight in smothering smoke at Elizabeth Avenue and Morrell Street battling a blaze that tore though the three-story building, gutting apartments on the upper levels and businesses below.
Firefighters made multiple attempts to go into the burning three-story building to rescue people inside but the fire was so fierce that it caused the center of the structure to collapse.
The fire started Wednesday afternoon inside the old Burry Biscuits warehouse on Newark Avenue. The fire chief declared the fire was under control Saturday.
Fire officials say they may not be able to completely extinguish the blaze until this weekend or possibly into next week.
