Isaiah Williams and A.J. English combined for 16 of Iona’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament record 19 3-pointers and the top-seeded Gaels beat No. 4 seed Monmouth 95-77 on Sunday in the semifinals.
The Gaels senior point guard won’t be able to forget last year’s MAAC title game defeat to St. Peter’s — a loss that still haunts him almost a year to the day after it happened.
The Gaels have been building all season for the MAAC Tournament and anything less than three victories and holding up a trophy next Monday night in Springfield will be a monumental disappointment.
John Dunne’s St. Peter’s Peacocks beat second-seeded Iona Gaels 62-57 to win the MAAC championship Monday. “These guys hung in there, they stuck it out for and for St. Peter’s and Jersey City,” Dunne told WFAN’s Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts Tuesday morning.
