To mark the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the New York State Museum has posted an online exhibit featuring a newly discovered audio recording of a 1962 speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In the spirit of that message a number of volunteer events were planned for Monday. Volunteers will be able to participate in a number of cleaning and maintenance projects at city recreation centers around the five boroughs.
President Barack Obama is claiming his place in Martin Luther King’s 50-year-old dream, holding himself up as a symbol of the change King envisioned. But he also pointed to the nation’s lingering economic disparities as evidence that King’s hopes remain unfulfilled.
Amid a handful of allegations that threaten to mar his reputation in the Senate, Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., continues to maintain his innocence, decrying the accusations as right-wing attempts to “destroy” his career and invoking the words of Martin Luther King Jr. in asserting his faith that justice will win out.
To mark the 25th anniversary of King’s birthday becoming a federal holiday, services, ceremonies and parades were held Monday.
