A bonfire is lit to mark the Jewish holiday of Lag Baomer while tens of thousands of Satmar Hasidim celebrate May 9, 2012 in the village of Kiryas Joel, New York.  The origins of this celebration lie in the  village of Meron in current-day Israel, burial site of the Talmudic sage Rabbi Simeon bar Yochai.  Lag  Baomer marks the anniversary of his death approximately 1,900 years ago, and every year on this day around half a million Jews from all over the world make a pilgrimage to Meron. State Picks Hasidic Village Of Kiryas Joel To Lead Annexation Request
