Deputy Police Chief Ernest Jubilee had assured the public of a police presence in the garages after a carjacking in September left a tourist dead and a friend seriously injured.
Officials say the injuries sustained by Fairfield officer Gerald Veneziano — who had just recently returned to patrol duty after being shot in a road rage incident while he was off-duty last year — and Sgt. Christopher Oswald were not considered serious.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the man ran toward the fuel farm when the patrols approached. He was caught near a boat dock and never entered the restricted area.
There are 21 extra officers on patrol day and night in the troubled Long Island community.
