The ongoing partial government shutdown has meant a halt in inspections for puppy mills and pet dealers, and animal welfare advocates warn this means animals could be put in danger.
North Shore Animal League America said the dogs, cats, puppies and kittens came from commercial breeding operations in Missouri and Kansas and municipal shelters in Virginia and Tennessee.
The canines come in all shapes, sizes and ages. The breeds include Chihuahua, Bichon Frise, Chiweenies (a Chihuahua and Dachshund mix), Havanese and King Charles Cavalier.
The breeds range from Yorkshire terriers to Boxers. Other breeds included papillons, poodles, Tibentan terriers, French bulldogs and Maltese.
