For those devastated by Superstorm Sandy, the new year brings new hope of better days to come – and also an emphasis on helping others in need.
In Belle Harbor, volunteers pitched in to help the Red Cross feed Sandy-affected residents on this Christmas.
Firefighters are still on the scene of a huge 3-alarm blaze that ripped through a New Jersey apartment building Monday afternoon.
Those volunteers have taken to the streets in communities that were ravaged by Sandy and the Nor’Easter that followed to assist affected families in their time of need.
Residents said the blaze started just moments after power was restored. 50 people are now homeless because of the fire.
Nassau County, FEMA, Island Harvest and the Red Cross have added new locations for the distribution of food and drinks to thousands of residents impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
New Jersey Red Cross officials urged people who want to help out to not drop off goods or other material donations. Officials said they can get hard to handle and wind up actually hampering the delivery of aid.
The centers are open at 11:00 a.m. for lunch and 4:00 p.m. for dinner. Red Cross Comfort kits will also be made available at each location.
