Sister Marie Thornton
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Sister Marie Thornton, former Vice President of Finance for Iona College in New Rochelle, pleaded guilty to embezzlement Wednesday.
A Catholic nun who ran Iona College’s finances embezzled more than $850,000 and spent it on herself, federal prosecutors said Friday. Sister Marie Thornton was arrested Thursday and pleaded not guilty in federal court in Manhattan.
There was embezzlement and embarrassment at a local Catholic college on Wednesday. The school is reeling from a major theft, apparently at the hands of well-known nun who used to run the school’s finances.
