A controversy is cooking in a Suffolk County village as residents fight a church’s plan to feed the needy.
Gov. Chris Christie and his wife didn’t let the winter weather stop them as they spent more than an hour plating and serving a pre-Thanksgiving lunch at the soup kitchen at St. John’s Church.
The Hunger Action Network report shows that two-thirds of food pantries and soup kitchens have reported a drop in food donations while the majority of them said they served more people last year.
The data was compiled before superstorm Sandy struck, which caused a surge in demand for food banks. The organization said the natural disaster illustrates the need for food relief in disasters.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan along with high school volunteers from his hometown of St. Louis, M.O. distributed lunch at Saint Paul the Apostle’s soup kitchen on Columbus Avenue to the homeless and elderly.
