Excitement was building in Rome on Saturday, as the historic weekend canonization of two popes got underway.
Black smoke emerged from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling that a decision had not yet been made. The conclave will resume on Wednesday.
On Tuesday afternoon, Cardinal Dolan and 114 other princes of the Church will enter the world-famous Sistine Chapel, which has been transformed into a papal polling place.
Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said Benedict has had the pacemaker for years. He received the device before he became pope in 2005 to help regulate his heartbeat.
Looking weary during a third straight day of speeches and ceremony, Pope Benedict XVI led 22 new cardinals in Mass Sunday and prayed for help so that he and his aides can continue to carry out the Catholic church’s worldwide mission.
“I think it’s fantastic. He’s a great man and it’s great for the city,” said parishioner James Daly.
