Overflow Crowds Fill Newtown Church For Christmas Day Mass Less Than Two Weeks After School Massacre
The pastor of a church in Newtown that was attended by eight of the child victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting has told parishioners that this Christmas Day “is the day we begin everything all over again.”
Officials said Sunday that with the amount of ammunition Newtown elementary school massacre gunman Adam Lanza was carrying, he could have killed every student at the school.
Police have since given the all clear, but at least a dozen police officers dressed in camouflage SWAT gear and carrying guns searched the church and adjacent buildings for an hour before announcing it was safe.
With the church filled to capacity, hundreds of people spilled outside, some of them holding hands in circles and saying prayers. Others lit prayer candles and sang “Silent Night.”
