Nearly a dozen lower Broadway street vendors say they showed up to work on Monday only to find their corner at Liberty Street taken up by dozens of bike share racks.
City council members, advocates and venders rallied in front of City Hall Tuesday morning complaining about $1,000 penalties vendors say is a big hit to their modest incomes.
Dave Mercier, who is a vendor in Times Square, said some of the fines include those doled out for vending before eight o’clock at night and vending three feet from the sidewalk.
Restaurants in New York City have been required to display letter grades from the health department for over a year now but not street vendors. The City Council may consider changing that.
