The Book of Mormon
The 66th Annual Tony Awards — which acknowledges and honors Broadway’s best — is taking place live on Sunday night at the famed Beacon Theater.
A slew of acclaimed shows were up for Tony Awards in a remarkably competitive year, but a production that wasn’t even eligible still managed to cast a shadow — well, shall we make that a web? — over the proceedings.
The profane and hysterical “The Book of Mormon” took an early lead at the Tony Awards, snagging honors Sunday for best book, best direction of a musical, best featured actress and two technical awards.
Shows such as the runaway hit “The Book of Mormon,” longtime favorites “Wicked” and “The Lion King,” and even the troubled “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark” helped lift Broadway to new heights.
