USS Michael Murphy
Survivors from the New York metropolitan area and former USS Intrepid crew members placed a wreath in the Hudson River in remembrance of the 2,390 service members and 49 civilians killed in the attack.
The USS Michael Murphy, which was commissioned in October, was greeted by hundreds of people, including 30 Navy SEALs, hula dancers and a brass band, as it arrived in Pearl Harbor Wednesday.
In a ceremony that was more joyful than solemn, the U.S. Navy on Saturday commissioned the USS Michael Murphy, a sleek new warship named for a Navy SEAL who died in Afghanistan at age 29.
The USS Michael Murphy, a 510-foot destroyer, is being commissioned this weekend in New York City for a Long Island native and Navy lieutenant who became the first American awarded the Medal of Honor during the Afghanistan War when he was killed along with two fellow SEALs during an ambush in 2005.
