New York City boasts the same maternity stores you’ll find in malls across the country, including Destination Maternity and Belly Dance Maternity. But the city also offers one-of-a-kind stores with unique clothes for pregnant ladies. Herewith, our five favorites. By Jessica Allen.
“Give up wine, coffee, sushi, not fashion” goes the tagline at Bump Brooklyn, a maternity store in Park Slope. The focus here is on mid-priced styles by tons of designers for all kinds of situations, from casual denim for weekend fun to business casual to night-on-the-town gear to sportswear for the active mom-to-be. There’s even lingerie. In addition to offering a wide selection of maternity, nursing, and transitional clothes and accessories, Bump functions as a meet-up zone, encouraging mamas to get together and bond.
Manhattan’s largest consignment store for mommy and baby makes its home between Avenues A and B in the East Village, and it’s worth the trek. You’ll find furniture, toys, strollers, baby clothes, and toddler clothes as well as a great selection of duds for pregnant women and moms. All the better if you have items you’d like to off-load: consignors get a store credit for every item sold. If you get tired, have a seat on one of the purple lounge chairs dotting the space; they were a gift from Hotel Gansevoort.
In 2009, Madison Rose got its start in the owners’ bedroom, when Jilian DiChiaro began selling pre-owned maternity clothes that she’d gathered from friends, neighbors, and Craigslist. Today, Madison Rose sells new and gently used clothes for mom, baby, and bigger kid, and the owners continue to carefully cull the stock and ensure an excellent selection. The Carroll Gardens store also offers its own popular brand of “super stretch skinny jeans” as well as shorts. You can take a nutrition, CPR, or other class on site too.
Located on the Upper East Side, Veronique Maternity caters to the well-heeled pregnant lady. For going on 30 years, this upscale maternity store has specialized in body-conscious European styles; indeed, the store’s motto is “make your belly your new optimum accessory.” You’ll find a variety of labels on hand, including Vince, J.Brand, Michael Stars, and Three Dots. Veronique also has its own house line, as sophisticated and stylish as the women who shop here. Remember to look lively: you just might see a celebrity or two.
