As if you needed an excuse for a mid-week cocktail, Wednesday is National Tequila Day. Here’s a look at six of our favorite tequila-tainted cocktails in New York City. From margaritas to snow cones, each drink is worth celebrating.
The Lion In Summer, The Toucan & The Lion
Celebrate the holiday with something spicy and fierce — like “The Lion In Summer” cocktail at The Toucan & The Lion in the East Village. Tequila, sriracha, simple syrup, lime juice and ginger beer are shaken and served over ice, then garnished with an orange wedge. This cocktail is light and crisp with only hints of spice at the tail end of the drink, to keep it feisty. The Toucan & The Lion boasts a great summer happy hour, including half off all house cocktails and $4 beers on Sundays and Mondays.
Tequila Sorbet, Rayuela
165 Allen St
New York, NY 10002
The name of the restaurant – Rayuela – may be Spanish for “hopscotch,” but trust us — this dessert is not for the kiddies. The sophisticated sorbet is spiked with tequila. Lime juice, sugar and the boozy kick make for the ultimate summertime treat for grown ups.
Tequila Snow Cones, Zengo and La Biblioteca
622 3rd Ave.
New York, NY
Another boozy dessert treat, these so-called “snow cones” are available in Zengo’s dining room or the sultry lower-level library, La Biblioteca. The tequila-spiked frozen sweets are a perfect antidote to the summer heat. Flavors include tamarind, hibiscus and strawberry. The fruits are pureed into a syrup and poured over shaved ice before an ounce of tequila is added.
The Beetnik, Saxon & Parole
New York, NY 10012
We like this one for it’s “health” value. Seriously. Despite their sweetness, beets are low in calories and high in nutritional value, carrying folates, fiber, and vitamin C. The Beetnik combines all of the benefits of fresh beets with the deliciousness of Corralejo reposado tequila, Ilegal mezcal, vanilla, and ginger.
Strawberry Blonde, The Darby
Live music upstairs, fancy cocktails served alongside spinning DJs in the downstairs lounge — that’s how it’s done at the Darby. Dance into summer with a Strawberry Blonde, featuring Tanteo Jalapeno Tequila, lime juice, agave nectar and muddled strawberries. And if you’re a fashionista, the Glamour Girl, mixing Grey Goose Vodka, lime and mint over watermelon ice cubes may just be your most stylish accessory this season.
311 W. 17th St.
New York, NY 10011
At Chef Sue Torres’ Suenos, you can enjoy several fruit-flavored margaritas. Our favorite, the Blueberry-Hibiscus Margarita, seems just the thing for celebrating a day created to honor this drink. You’ll taste a combination of Herradura reposado tequila, Cointreau, blueberry puree, hibiscus, and fresh lime juice. A deliciously fruity and floral variation that goes down like silk.
