Cronut, Dominique Ansel Bakery
The recent Cronut craze that’s hit the city has garnered all sorts of media attention, and we very well can’t name the city’s best creative doughnuts without putting these are the to of the list. Half croissant, half doughnut, this new creation by Dominique Ansel has caused a foodie buzz — and created massive lines outside the Dominque Ansel Bakery in SoHo. These sweets have been selling out every day — and are being flipped and sold at higher prices by those looking to make a buck — so arrive early if you’re hoping to celebrate National Doughnut Day with a Cronut.
Double Smoked Churro Doughnut, Tres Carnes
Fany Gerson of La Newyorkina, known for her delicious Mexican sweets, specially crafted this crema de caramelo stuffed doughnut, dusted with house-double smoked sugar and cinnamon for Chelsea’s fast casual Mexican eatery, Tres Carnes. Those with a sweet tooth will go crazy for the gooey caramel filling. Enjoy this treat alone or as the perfect ending to the fresh Texas smoked Mexican fare, like the Smoked Brisket Burrito.
Peanut Butter & Jelly Doughnut, Dun-Well Doughnuts
With a list of over 200 doughnuts, it’s hard to choose a favorite at Dun-Well. This Vegan doughnut shop in Brooklyn bakes fresh creations twice daily, so there’s never a chance your sweet will be stale. The doughnuts rotate daily from the long list, but staples include traditional glazed, cinnamon sugar, coconut and chocolate. The Peanut Butter & Jelly is a favorite, stuffed with jelly and covered with creamy peanut butter frosting. Crazier flavors include Caramel Popcorn, Easter’s Cadbury® Cream Egg and Rose with Dark Lavender.
Fruity Pebbles, The General
The General’s bakery is brand new, and the trendy eatery is taking doughnuts to a whole new level. Chef Thiago Silva combines two breakfast staples to whip up cereal-inspired doughnuts in flavors like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cocoa Puffs and our favorite, Fruity Pebbles. Our very own WCBS-TV’s Alex Denis recently visited the new sweets shop, where she got a behind-the-scenes look at how the treats are crafted.
According to their Twitter account, for every purchase made on Friday, June 7 to celebrate National Doughnut Day at Dough, you’ll have a chance to win four free doughnuts per week for a year! With gourmet flavors like Hibiscus, Lemon Poppy Seed and Dulce De Leche with Almonds, you’ll feel like a winner either way. Bacon Doughnuts, Traif
Traif, translated as “unkosher” regarding to meats in Hebrew, is true to its name, as this Williamsburg restaurant serves a number of pig-heavy dishes including their popular Bacon Donuts. Deep fried dough balls are dipped in dulce de leche and sprinkled with chopped bacon. These are the ultimate in a sweet and savory doughnut tasting.
Baked Cinnamon Sugar, Butter Lane
This East Village cupcake bakery is open bright and early at 8am to start your morning off with a sweet smile. Baked doughnuts are dipped in butter then rolled in cinnamon and sugar for a light and fluffy breakfast or afternoon dessert. Butter Lane also recently added Nutella stuffed homemade tarts and rotating muffin flavors to their menu to kick off your work day or weekend.
The Flex Doughnut Collection, Flex Mussels
Flex Mussels may be known for their fresh seafood and great happy hour specials, but their doughnuts are worth traveling for. These stuffed fried dough balls are offered in rotating flavors like PB & J, S’mores, Fluffernutter, Salted Caramel and Tequila Peach, just to name a few. The delicious flavors change often, so you can always try something new when dining at Flex. Also worth mentioning for National Doughnut Day is their Deep Fried Whoopie Pie with dark chocolate cake stuffed with cream cheese filling and caramelized white chocolate cream.
