New Yorkers often get the short end of the produce stick, spending big bucks on organic foods at pricey supermarkets or buying second-rate fruit from their local deli or fruit stand. Luckily, there are more than 50 farmers' markets throughout the city that offer fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, breads and humanely raised meats from local farmers. Here's a sampling of the city's biggest and best "greenmarkets."

Union Square Greenmarket (Manhattan)

The granddaddy of New York City's farmers' markets is located in Union Square. Chefs from the city's best restaurants arrive early to select the freshest fruits, vegetables, breads and cheeses from more than 140 vendors. Also available are beans, grains, wine, maple syrup, baked goods, preserves and cut plants and flowers. At perhaps the city's fanciest farmers' market, there are book signings, cooking demonstrations and wine-pairing lessons throughout the week.

Located at the northwest entrance to Prospect Park, the second largest greenmarket in the city is an addictive destination for Brooklynites who find their bliss from eating fresh-baked scones while sitting on a park bench. Locals love Milk Thistle's organic chocolate milk and vegan goodies from Body and Soul. The park-based location and access to fresh meats, cheeses, fruits and veggies make it the perfect place to shop for a picnic. In addition to a large array of fresh produce, there are also family-friendly events like pumpkin painting and cider pressing.

No guide to city farmers' markets would be complete without this Queens gem known for its great bargains, Mexican produce and wild-caught fish. Located in a diverse and vibrant neighborhood, it's the largest greenmarket in Queens. Local farmers provide a huge selection of fresh eggs, vegetables, fruit, fish, chicken and honey. Visitors rave about the sweet peaches, access to specialty ingredients at affordable prices and live music.
