Under the Affordable Care Act, also known as "Obamacare," millions of uninsured and underinsured Americans—including 1.8 million uninsured people in New York City—now have access to affordable health insurance options. New Yorkers can buy health coverage through New York State's health exchange, called NY State of Health.

You may be wondering how this affects you. Here, we answer a few of the most common questions about what Obamacare means for you and your family.

Can I get insurance through NY State of Health?
Just about anybody who is uninsured or underinsured will be able to buy healthcare coverage through NY State of Health (also known as the "Exchange"). This includes single or married people with or without children, young adults, pregnant women, the unemployed, and more.

What if I can't afford health insurance?
You may be eligible for financial assistance. This help is also referred to as a "subsidy" or "federal tax credit."

What is the average premium, or monthly cost, for an individual or family?
A premium is the monthly cost you pay to keep your health coverage. Your premium can vary, based on (1) the amount of financial assistance you and your family qualify for, and (2) the level of the plan you choose. Financial assistance is based on your income and family size.

What is the average financial assistance for an individual or family?
Financial assistance is based on income and plan choice. A Healthfirst representative can walk you through the details.
