CBS New York helps relieve some of the back-to-school stress by letting you know where to go for the best and most economical educational supplies in the city.
The Scholastic Store
The Scholastic name has been synonymous with the love of learning for 90 years. They really only do one type of school supply—books—but they do books better than anybody else. Make sure to time your book-buying visit with one of the free family events Scholastic runs every Saturday afternoon, when costumed characters such as Madeline or Maya and Miguel read stories and take pictures with your kids. Scholastic also has fantastic birthday parties and we like the idea of having a bash in an educational setting, really emphasizing the fun of learning.
Tannen’s in the Bronx is a full-service teacher/child supply store and has been serving the community for 70 years. They carry everything, and we mean everything, from classroom decorations and test prep to pencils and Moon Sand. Basic, loyal, no frills, and great customer service. What else could you need?
The Learning Wheel
1514 Avenue Z
The Learning Wheel in Brooklyn is owned by Rob and Clare Resnick who have a combined 60+ years in education and know how to stock a school supply store. They also took great care to make the store look like a nicely decorated classroom, so shopping there is a pleasant experience. The Learning Wheel has a nice reputation as the go-to establishment for elementary and junior high school teachers around the Sheepshead Bay area.
Carol School Supply
Carol School Supply in Queens has been around for over 40 years and they know what they’re doing. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about books, toys, and educational material that are age appropriate for your child. They specialize in Barron’s Review Books, Test Prep materials, Teacher curriculum and resource books, and have an extensive selection for special-needs kids. We’re also pretty happy about the fact that Carol’s is open seven days a week, just in case you need something for Monday and don’t remember until Sunday!
