Best Free Summer Concerts In NYC

Summer is almost here and in New York City that means free access to various music and dancing events, many of which are sponsored by the city's Department of Parks and Recreation. Date: June 7, 3015 at 6 p.m.

The Bayside Historical Society is hosting its annual concert this summer. The historical society was founded in 1964 and is located in the Castle in Fort Totten. The society hosts several events throughout the year with a specific focus on the arts and humanities. The outdoor concert is co-sponsored with the New York Department of Parks and Recreation and features the classic rock band Desert Highway. Lawn chairs or blankets are suggested.

Date: June 21, 3015 at 2 p.m.

Sousapalooza will feature the West Point Band. The event is three hours in length and will be held outdoors. The West Point Band or U.S. Military Academy Band is the U.S. Army's oldest active band and dates back to the American Revolution. The band will play the music of John Philip Sousa who is known for songs such as "Semper Fidelis" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever".

Date: May 28, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. Repeats weekly until June 25, 2015.

Frederick law Olmsted designed Riverside Park back in the 1870s. Over the next 60 years or so, the park was developed and expanded and today spans 330 acres. The Riverside Park Conservancy, the organization that maintains Riverside Park, hosts several different events through the year. The Locomotive Lawn Live is a weekly musical event that celebrates the diverse group of people that call New York City home. At the Summer on the Hudson: Locomotive Lawn Live there will be music, dance, and puppetry in languages such as Spanish or Mandarin.

If you're looking to add some dancing into your life this summer then Dancing in the Park is for you. This weekly event is an after work dance class taught by Talia Castro-Pozo. You'll learn several dance styles such as the Swing and Salsa. If you're not swayed by the thought of a free dance class, will the live music provided after each lesson move you to attend?

This summer why not give classical music a try? The Queens Symphony Orchestra, the "only professional orchestra and the oldest and largest professional arts organization in Queens," will be hosting a concert in Forest Park. The hour and a half-long concert will feature many classical favorites. The Queens Symphony Orchestra's concert is outdoors and great for everyone, from novice fans to more seasoned pros. With live music and the great outdoors, it's sure to be a great summer evening for all involved.
