Bingo began in the United States in 1929. After being popularized by Edwin Lowe as "Beano," the name was changed, according to some sources, when Lowe overheard a lady yell Bingo by mistake. However, some say the name began in the UK. In New York City, Bingo is still a popular game and is played in several locations. Read on for some of the best Bingo spots that New York City has to offer.

Fifth Avenue Bingo Hall hosts exactly the type of Bingo that springs to mind when the game is mentioned. It's held every night starting at 6 p.m. except on Sundays, when the hall is open for Bingo at noon. There is a charge to enter and a charge per card, but the jackpot is worth it. A nice addition is that there is table service so you won't have to interrupt your game to get food.

Want to try something a little different? Then give Top Bingo Hall a shot. It's located in Queens Village and hailed as one of New York City's largest Bingo halls. There's a fantastic concession stand and the chance to take up jackpots as much as $6,000. There is free parking and it is easily accessible by subway. Top Bingo Hall offers day games on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, and night games every night.

Bingo at Le Poisson Rouge is really different. Hosted by NYC celebrity drag queen Linda Simpson, guests are treated to a twist on the game itself with a DJ, drink specials and an assortment of prizes. Admission is free, but Bingo cards are $2 each. Bingo at Le Posson Rouge is held on Friday and Saturday nights around 6:45 p.m.

The Standard Grill

The Standard Grill is located right under the High Line on Washington Street. It doesn't offer Bingo all the time, but when it does, it's certainly worth the trip. On Sundays, Not Your Standard Bingo combines fun and food at no cost to play. You can spend as much or as little as you want simply by selecting what you wish from the drink and food menu. The late night snack list has many options worth checking out such as the Standard Espress (Bourbon, Cherry Espresso Cordial).

In similar fashion to Le Poisson Rouge, Bingo at the Stonewall Inn on Monday nights is hosted by several drag queens. The establishment has a long history in the area dating back to the Stonewall Riots in 1969. There is no cover charge to play Bingo here, and it takes place during Liquid Brunch, which features drinks such as margaritas and Long Island Ice Teas.
