Almost every New Yorker knows someone who’s moved there in the past 5 years, and Williamsburg’s early adopters may have known they were on to a good thing, but only now is the rest of the city waking up to that fact. Billysburg has done more than just blossom, it’s darn near exploded and has the distinct feel of old East Village cool meets hipster chic. There’s music on the waterfront and the burgeoning neighborhood is home to some of the coolest dive bars & hottest night spots in the city. From the Brooklyn Bowl to Duff’s, from Bembe’s to the Music Hall, Williamsburg’s new vibrance is well worth the time it may take you to wrestle with the MTA to get there. And if you make the trip, these are a few of the establishments you may want to visit.

Reviews & more info

Centered around a bowling alley, the 600-person performance venue with food by Blue Ribbon stakes out a whole new territory, literally and conceptually, in the former Hecla Iron Works building, one block from the burgeoning waterfront. It’s the Billysburg night home to just about every hip celeb and hipster one can find. On Thursdays you can catch a couple games of bowling and stay to hear ?uestlove’s late night DJ set. On the weekends, you might come to hear a national act and then end up drinking shots with them at the bar until the wee hours. The Bowl has a lot of things for a lot of people so it’s definitely worth the look.

Duff's Of Williamsburg

168 Marcy Avenue (by S5th St.)
Brooklyn, NY 11211

Jimmy Duff opened a bar in Williamsburg and covered every inch of the space with his collection of baby skulls and taxidermy, street signs, random posters, an Elvis bust, disembodied doll heads, red lights, a Gorilla suit and pin-up shots. He’s also added a big patio with grill, and kept the metal-heavy jukebox and cheap drink specials that make it a dive bar all-star.

mhow Best Things To Do In Williamsburg After Dark

A band onstage at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg

Music Hall Of Williamsburg
66 North 6th St. (betw. Wythe & Kent)
Brooklyn, NY 11211

Reviews & more info

One of the key venues on the forefront of Williamsburg’s nationally recognized indie music scene, MHOW features a top-notch sound system and a relatively small stage that still manages to attract some of the brighter stars in the indie scene. The drinks are pretty much par for course — $6 draft beer, a little more for booze if that’s your thing. Once called North Six, Bowery Presents came in & turned it into one of the better emerging smaller venues in the city. It holds anywhere from 400 – 600 people, and there are great sight lines throughout the club, so don’t worry about getting there early to stake out a spot.

bembe Best Things To Do In Williamsburg After Dark

The bar at Bembe in Willaimsburg

81 S. 6th St. (at Berry St.)
Brooklyn, NY 11211

Reviews & more info

If your looking to find a place to dance to some Latin music, look no further. Bembe is a really cool place right in the shadow of the Willaimsburg Bridge. The place isn’t as big as it thinks it is, so it does have a tenedency to get packed on weekends, but there’s great music, and a load of people gyrating to a unified rhythm. Live percussion, Brazilian funk, Salsa, Afro-beat, Culture and Dancehall can be found here on any given night. There’s also a tropical drinks menu that includes, mojitos, rum punch, a tasty vodka concoction marinated in and served from an actual watermelon—and an airy, island-like décor of exposed brick and blonde wood.

The awning of the famous Trash Bar in Williamsburg

Trash Bar
256 Grand St. (betw. Driggs & Roebling)
Brooklyn NY 11211

Reviews & more info

A true Williamsburg veteran, The Trash Bar finds itself in the center of the WillyB’s revival as one of the best local bars and premier music venue capable of delivering the goods when it comes to heavy rock-n-roll shows. Grungetastic as it’s been called, but the bar is famous for its loud rock, cheap cocktails & FREE tater tots. It’s a nicely set-up place, even when it’s crowded, you don’t feel packed in. The bar is lined with car and van seats, which are extremely comfortable. Also, there’s a pool table that’s FREE, an amazing jukebox music selection of mostly punk, rock, and some pop, and vodka tonics for $6, and 5 shots of well liquor for $15. It’s definitely dirty, but in a reasonable way, if that makes sense.

The bar at Pete's Candy Store

Pete’s Candy Store
709 Lorimer Street
Brooklyn, 11211

Reviews & more info

You can’t not like Pete’s Candy Store. Thats impossible. I’ve always been able to get a table when coming here, even on the weekends. You will like it when you walk in and you will love it once you see the music venue and the backyard. Plus, they have such great nights, like Bingo on Boozday Tuesdays & tribvia quiz-offs on Wednesday. And, perhaps most of all, people talk about how cool the bartenders are for a variety of reasons – from buying back drinks to keeping lost cell phones safe. The live music is also a favorite. Worth getting there early to get a table, as it can get crowded. . Check out Pete’s website to see who’s playing, but it’s definitely worth a trip on a random Tuesday or Wednesday night as well.

Some of the tap beer selection at Spuyten Duyvil

Spuyten Duyvil
359 Metropolitan Ave.(nr Havemeyer Ave.)
Brooklyn, NY 11211

Reviews & more info

The literal German translation for Spuyten Duyvil is “devils whirlpool’ and it’s a perfect name for a place that has a continually rotating selection of obscure beers, Kegs from micro breweries, and various regions of Europe also find their way here, too. Probably one of the best beer in the entire city for brew snobs, even. What really makes it is the great back yard in the summer months. But if you like Coors Light and a plate of wings, then Spuyten Duyvil may not be your place.

Enjoying a drink at the bar inside the Alligator Lounge

Alligator Lounge
600 Metropolitan Ave. (betw. Lorimer St & Leonard St)
Brooklyn, NY 11211

Reviews & more info

Bigger than it’s sister the Corocodile Lounge, the Gator is dive bar meets frat boy decor and is nothing to write home about, but the free brick over pizza (which is REALLY good) makes it hard to pass up. Drinks are cheap, there’s pool & karaoke, and besides the pizza, there’s also a good deal of space, so bring your friends and don’t worry about getting squeezed in.
